"WebAhead"
is the branding name for IBM's Advanced Interent
Technology Group andthe bannerword which unites
its 60 members with Research, Marketing and IGS
(International Global Services) to creative interdisciplinary
virtual teams.
The
successor of the Atlanta Olympics team that
created the concept of Internet Event Marketing
with events such as the US Open, the Deep Blue
/Kasparov Chessmatches , the team now explores
concepts such as internet robots, Instant Messaging
and Smart Card Technology.
In
the absence of strongly branded sports events
that could lend an identity to the group, ti
was necessary to create an identity that would
allow the members to feel part of a larger inititative,
while advetising the name "WebAhead"
to the general IBM user population.
This
graphic combines a natural world image of the
Pacific Rainforest with a representation of
a mysterious world to suggest a strong tie to
the natural world. The green tonalities of nature
are rarely seen in computer metaphors, and proved
a successful concept. This load screen was downloaded
by several thousand IBM'ers to replace standard
Windows graphics at boot-time and drew wide
attention to teh WebAhead group's work.
